Zamzam-The Blessed Water of Islam
Zamzam-the Blessed Water of Umrah/Hajj is one of the greatest blessings that Allah has granted the pilgrims who visit the holy city of Makkah. Flowing near the Kaaba for thousands of years, Zamzam water has a history that connects directly to the story of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him), his wife Hajar, and their infant son Ismail. When Hajar ran between the hills of Safa and Marwah in search of water, Allah caused the spring of Zamzam to gush forth near the feet of baby Ismail. From that moment, Zamzam became a symbol of Allah’s mercy and provision, not only for the family of Ibrahim but for all generations of believers.

During Umrah, millions of Muslims from all over the world come to Makkah to perform this sacred act of worship. Along with Tawaf, Sa’i, and the state of Ihram, drinking Zamzam holds a special place in their spiritual journey. After completing Tawaf around the Kaaba, it is a Sunnah to drink Zamzam water, facing the Qiblah, and to make heartfelt supplications. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said that Zamzam water is for whatever intention it is drunk. This makes every sip of Zamzam during Umrah an opportunity to seek forgiveness, healing, and blessings from Allah.
Zamzam During Tawaf
When pilgrims perform Tawaf, they circle the Kaaba seven times with sincerity and devotion. Tawaf is a reminder of the angels circling the Throne of Allah, and it places the believer at the center of faith. After finishing Tawaf, pilgrims usually go to the Zamzam stations to refresh themselves with its pure and cool water. The act strengthens them physically and spiritually for the next stage of their rituals, including the Sa’i between Safa and Marwah.
Connection with Sa’i
The ritual of Sa’i(Sai) is directly tied to the origin of Zamzam. When Hajar ran between the two hills seven times, she embodied patience, trust, and struggle. Her effort is remembered and honored by every pilgrim who performs Sa’i during Umrah or Hajj. After completing Sa’i, pilgrims often reflect on how Allah responded to Hajar’s sincere effort by providing Zamzam, a water source that has never dried up. Drinking Zamzam after Sa’i connects the pilgrim to this story of hope and divine mercy.
Ihram and Spiritual Purity
The state of Ihram, which every pilgrim enters before beginning Umrah, symbolizes leaving behind worldly distractions and focusing solely on Allah. Zamzam complements this state of purity. When pilgrims drink Zamzam in Ihram, they often make du’a for acceptance of their worship, guidance, and protection. The water reminds them that just as Allah answered Hajar’s desperate need, He can answer their prayers too.

Zamzam is not ordinary water. It has quenched the thirst of prophets, pilgrims, and believers for thousands of years. It continues to flow miraculously, never running dry despite serving millions each year. For Muslims, Zamzam is a sign of Allah’s mercy, generosity, and power. Whether during Tawaf, Sa’i, or in the sacred clothing of Ihram, pilgrims cherish the moment of drinking Zamzam as one of the highlights of their Umrah journey.
